LISBON (Reuters) - A runaway bride who allegedly left the groom standing at the
altar while she fled with 150,000 euros (95,000 pounds) of his family's money
has been arrested by Portuguese police.
Correia da Manha newspaper said the 32-year-old woman left the groom and 150
guests waiting at the Batalha monastery, one of Portugal's most revered national
shrines, two weeks ago.
The woman allegedly disappeared with about 150,000 euros given her by the
groom's family in Pombal, a city about 120 km (70 miles) north of Lisbon, the
newspaper said.
She also allegedly walked off with valuable items from the groom's house,
Correio da Manha said.
The newspaper said police arrested her in Lisbon on charges of fraud and theft.
A judge ordered her to report to police regularly pending investigations.
A police spokesman in Pombal was not immediately available for comment.
The groom's family spent about 20,000 euros on the wedding and invited 200 of
the woman's family and friends to attend, the newspaper said. Like her, they
never showed up.
