STOCKHOLM - A Swedish mother was charged with infant homicide on Thursday after telling police she had killed her two newborn babies and kept their bodies in the freezer, police said.

The 31-year-old woman, who if convicted faces up to six years in jail, gave birth to both babies at home and had apparently kept the pregnancies a secret.

''She has told us that she did it and we have no reason at this stage to doubt her,'' Superintendent Jan Ullen at the Stockholm police told Reuters.

She has been under supervision at a psychiatric hospital since being arrested on Wednesday while she was at work.

The women has another three children. A 13-year-old boy, who had lived at home with her, is now being cared for by authorities. An 11-year-old girl lives with her father and a nine-year-old girl had been adopted.

Ullen said police knew nothing at this stage about who had fathered the two dead babies.

Police launched an investigation after a baby's body was found in a forest near the woman's home. She had apparently removed one of the bodies from the freezer and left it in the woodland.
